Charles Massey, Jr. was chair of the Department
of Art from 1982 to 1988. He received the OSU Alumni Award for Distinguished
Teaching in 1981, and, a 1999 Council of Graduate Students Service Award.
His work, the majority of which is prints and drawings, has been exhibited
internationally, nationally and regionally in more than 760 exhibitions;
it has received more than 175 awards and is included in more than 75 public
collections, including the Library of Congress, Egypt, England, Iceland,
Japan, Korea and Poland. Professor Massey has received three Individual
Artist Fellowships from the Ohio Arts Council and one from the National
Endowment for the Arts. He has been listed in WHO'S WHO IN AMERICAN ART,
since 1978. He has also been a lecturer, visiting artist, juror, and consultant,
including residencies with universities and programs around the world.
He was president of the Columbus Art League from 1983-1993 and received
its 46th Annual Distinguished Service Award in 1993. He was appointed
to the Italian Village Architectural Review Commission by the Mayor of
Columbus in 1977 and was recognized for Distinguished Service to the Community
by Columbus City Council in 1989. In 1997, Professor Massey received the
Louis Nemzer Award for his dedication and work in support of the principles
of academic freedom.
