Michael Mercil has returned to the Department
of Art, where from 1998-2000 he was director of Foundation Studies
and assistant professor. He has been a visiting artist and/or lecturer
at, among other institutions, Virginia Commonwealth University; the Minneapolis
College of Art & Design Institute for Public Art; Harvard University
Graduate School of Design and Antioch College. Professor Mercil's artwork
has been included in both solo and group exhibitions organized by the
North Dakota Museum of Art, Grand Forks; the Fabric Work and Museum, Philadelphia;
the University of Virginia Art Museum, Charlottesville; SPACES, Cleveland;
the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Minneapolis Institute of Arts; and
N.A.M.E. Gallery, Chicago. He recently completed a piece for the newly
renovated Ohio Stadium recruiting lounge.
Currently, Professor Mercil is working with artist Ann Hamilton and landscape
architect Michael Van Valkenburgh on projects for Battery Park City in
New York City and the downtown Columbus riverfront. They also worked together
on the award-winning design for the Fort Duquasne Boulevard Park in downtown
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Professor Mercil was a NEA Artist Design Fellow
in the Department of Public Works in the City of Saint Paul. Other awards
include Greater Columbus Arts Council, McKnight and Jerome Foundation
Fellowships. An occasional contributor to PLACES magazine, his writings
have also appeared in PUBLIC ART REVIEW.
